  • Leilehua Lanzilotti is part of the new cohort of NACF SHIFT – Transformative Change and Indigenous Arts grantees in partnership with Te Ao Mana! Not only does this award commission the libretto for the opera, it also provides funding for community action leading up to the opera and gives us robust support for fellow Kānaka Maoli involved in the project (choreography by Anthony Aiu and costumes by Manaola Yap).

  • May 2022 — Liliʻu composer and librettist Anne Leilehua Lanzilotti was a finalist for the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Music for her string orchestra work, with eyes the color of time.

  • May 2022 — Spectrum News feature on Liliʻu: “A new opera honors Queen Liliʻuokalani’s legacy.”

  • April 2022 — The development of Liliʻu received funding from OPERA America Women Composers: Discovery Grants program, supported by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. OPERA America Women Composers: Discovery Grants program provides financial assistance to identify support and help develop the work of women composers writing for the operatic medium, raising their visibility, and promoting awareness of their compositions to the field. Funding for this program is provided by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Program for Commissioning Women in the Performing Arts.

    The award supported a workshop in October 2022 with Roomful of Teeth in New York City.

  • February 2022 — Lanzilotti received an award from The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement in partnership with Kamehameha Schools through the E OLA (Empowering ʻŌiwi Leadership Award) program that will support research and development for Liliʻu.
